Beings of the Interspace

We have already discussed at some length both the “geography” and the “ethnography” of the Interworld. Nevertheless, this subject, despite its critical significance for both worldview and practice, remains one of the least developed and systematized in the whole corpus of “occult” sciences.

It is difficult to pinpoint the cause of this paradox with certainty; however, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the Interworld itself “resists” its own study, both because of its chthonic, unstructured nature and because of the dispositions of most of its inhabitants, who are predatory and not interested in allowing the “prey” to study the predators’ habits.

Nevertheless, for magi, both practical “forays” into the Interspace and the recording of information and impressions gathered there have always been and remain among the most important tasks and battlefields.

Let us attempt to order and expand on what has already been said.

The Tradition calls the Interworld, or the Interspace (also — Limbus, Antarabhava), the totality of spaces occupied by minds that possess some form of “incompleteness”, having lost or not yet acquired their full perceptual abilities available to them and which also lack a stable anchor.

In accordance with the principle of the quaternary, four basic types of such “incompleteness” are possible:

1) “Restriction” of the Flows of Power — the “grey” condition of mind. Such a “servitor” being does not fully belong to either the descending or ascending currents, mediating and opposing them and serving either as a Gatekeeper or as a Calling spirit (Epiklet).

2) “Restriction” of the possibility of manifestation — the exclusion of a given physical domain from a mind’s access. This is how Elementals are formed — spirits of the “primary elements”.

3) “Restriction” as a transitional state — afterlife, dreaming. Such is the nature of Elementers and of “pre‑embodied” gandharvas.

4) “Restriction” as an independent mode of manifestation: “settling” in the Interworld. This is the nature of elementaries, which by origin may belong to the first three types of beings if those beings, for some reason, are delayed or “stuck” in the Interspace.

At the same time, the inhabitants of the Interworld can be divided by their influence on others into:

  1. Those who maintain the worlds and the Interworld – Archons, guides, elementals and Epiklets;
  2. Those ensuring the processes of dying and reincarnation – Anunnaki, Alastors, Gallu, Namtars;
  3. “Transit” ones — Elementers;
  4. “Settled” — elementaries.

Note that any beings that remain in the interspace for a long time tend to develop a predatory nature, since in the Interworld the Great Flow of Power is absent — that is, energy production is impossible — and therefore they can obtain energy only from other beings that bring it from the worlds.

Among such predators one can also discern three distinct feeding strategies:

1) Provoking energy dispersal (this is what Archons, Gatekeepers and Epiklets do, including the “Enochian” spirits). This strategy is characteristic of beings that feed on the “red” light — activated life‑energy;

2) “Seizing” — characteristic of elementaries that feed predominantly on life‑energy;

3) “Scavenging” — feeding on the “remnants” of energy of disembodied beings — characteristic of afterlife spirits, although most elementaries do not disdain it either.

As we have already discussed, the largest and most heterogeneous group of inhabitants of the Interspace is formed by elementaries — beings of various natures and origins united by their adaptation to dwelling in the Interworld. A significant portion of them consists of “stuck” or intentionally delayed Elementers — disembodied beings whose nature shifts from temporary transients to permanent inhabitants of the Interspace — and also former representatives of “proto‑humanity” — Fairies.

We have already said that Traditions call such beings “hungry spirits” — utukku or pretas (from Sanskrit “preta” (प्रेत) — “the departed”). Upon acquiring a predatory nature, utukku also develop various feeding strategies. Among them are groups that feed primarily on the energy of fear (edimmu, pishachi), on longing and dissatisfaction (rakshasas, tsen), on sexual energies (alyali), on enmity and hatred (matrikas, mamo), and others. There is also a large group of utukku — “scavengers” — bhutas, as well as vetalas, which “devour” the residual energy from dead bodies. At the apex of the utukku hierarchy stand the Rephaim (Gyalpo), who feed on all kinds of life‑energy and provoke large outflows of it.

Each type of Interworld inhabitant is perceived differently, and although they have no stable form they display characteristic features in their energy. For example, rakshasas possess an “earthy”, “masculine” nature and appear dark red in colour, while mamo also appear dark red or black but are of a “feminine” nature.

Knowledge of the nature of each type of elemental enables the development of strategies to oppose them and to prevent the loss of energy they cause. For example, confronting rakshasas requires courage and fire, while mamo require gentleness and water.

Moreover, it is important to study the cartography of the Interworld, since it is in this space that the mind spends a third of its life and the interval between incarnations. It is strange that people devote so much attention to the geography of their world, even explore other planets, and yet know nothing of the structure of the Interspace. We may never find ourselves in Antarctica or on Wrangel Island, but with absolute certainty we will have to pass through Hart‑Nitr and experience all the peculiarities of its terrain.

One would hope that the study and mapping of the Interworld will be continued by trained Magi and that it may be necessary to establish entire Schools and Lines specializing in this matter, approaching it seriously and thoroughly, without the carelessness and overconfidence of the new “dreamers”, “psychonauts” and other such marionettes of the Archons. Then, when disciplined researchers, free from fantasies and delusional interpretations, correct, expand and refine the maps drawn up by the ancients, the Way through the Interspace will become simpler and safer, and the efficiency of energy gathering will increase.

  1. …I enter sleep,

    or fly in,

    there is no life for me there.

    Or to indulge

    in my death-nonlife,

    and the undead –

    beside…

    Not to be afraid.
