So who, then, are the “Enochian” Calls?
“Enochian” Magic, born of the visions recorded by John Dee and Edward Kelley and developed by the efforts of the Magi of the Golden Dawn and many other investigators of the world’s hidden realms, is undeniably one of the most controversial domains of the sacred arts.
We have already discussed a number of points concerning this system; now let us pause on another — its intrinsic nature.
In order to understand which forces are actually activated in operations involving the Tablets and Calls, we will first try to discern the nature of the forces that gave rise to the system.
It might seem a small matter — why is it so important to determine the nature of Dee and Kelley’s contacts and those of subsequent “Enochian” contactees? It matters simply because one needs to know what an “Enochian” ritual really is: an invocation, a contest, a realization, or whether it conceals the feeding of hungry spirits.
It is quite evident that at least some of the “Enochian angels” who appeared to Dee and Kelley were Subcelestial spirits, Grey Spirits dwelling on the Threshold of worlds within an ascending current of Power — in other words, formally speaking, they conform to the picture of “fallen angels” in the Christianized-Kabbalistic worldview.
However, the greater part of the beings who contacted Kelley and Dee had nothing to do with angels at all, but were perfectly terrestrial inhabitants — Fairies of the Unblessed Court; and their “mother,” repeatedly mentioned in the revelations of the “angels,” was evidently none other than the dark goddess Domnu, as also confirmed by the requirement to “silver the pages” when recording the words of that goddess.
A significant portion of these beings had apparently already fully assimilated into the Interworld, becoming elementaries, yet the “earthly” origin of the “Enochian angels” is nonetheless quite traceable.
In fact, Enochian Magic is not “heavenly” but essentially terrestrial in nature, and all its quaternary structure — the elemental tablets, the Watchtowers and the Pyramids — corresponds admirably to that earthly character. Moreover, one may confidently assert that Enochian Magic is part of Fairy Magic.
It is hardly surprising that the visions began in Britain — a place where contacts with Fairies have long been facilitated by the isles’ nature. Besides, the “Enochian angels” behave unlike typical ministering spirits; on the contrary, their behavior shows much freedom, wilfulness, irritability and caprice. It is true that another “Enochian” contactee — the famous Russian visionary Daniil Andreev — successfully applied the same methodology to study the structure of our world and its underside.
The “Enochian universe” offers a detailed description of the Interworld and of its projections into our world. The “Watchtowers” are the Sacred cities Phinas, Murias, Phaleg and Oriax as described from within, while the “ethers” reflect the vertically-layered structure of Elemental space.
Without in any way disparaging the authority of Crowley or the importance of his visions in Algeria, we note that this Great Magus ascended in his visions precisely through the layers of the Interworld, exploring the uncharted regions of the boundless extramundane expanse.
The sevenfold, heptarchic system likewise confirms the terrestrial nature of the “magic of angels.” By working with projections of Secondary causalities one can achieve effective results, as practitioners of Enochiana themselves attest.
What has been said so far should be enough to point toward conclusions about the nature of the system that are useful both theoretically and practically.
It remains to ascertain the deeper consequences of its application.
Today, following D. Tyson’s lead, the prevailing opinion has become that the “secret task” of the “Enochian angels” was the bringing about of the apocalypse, in effect, the destruction of the human world. And such a view is entirely consistent with the desire of the Unblessed Court and its higher echelon — the Fomors-Outdwellers — to plunge the world into chaos and ruin.
Yet the desires of the Fomors are only their desires, until men begin to actualize them. One can only hope that none of those possessing a strong will will be so mad as to open the gates of the Watchtowers, thereby causing a mingling of worlds and the intervention of Interworld inhabitants in our realm. The war that would erupt in that case would be worthy of Tolkien’s creations.
Be that as it may, any Enochian ritual summons forces usually located in the Interworld.
With sufficient preparation and discipline by the operator, drawing these forces in can, of course, be governed by his will — especially since, like other branches of Fairy Magic, Enochiana depends primarily on the Middle Pillar.
However, if the operator lacks will, his mind risks being carried off into the Elements, where — in a world of instability — it can easily become lost or be destroyed.

In the “Enochian” system, the cornerstone of description and operation is the Quadruple Principle, reflected in both the “Great Tablet” and in the structure of the “Sons”, “Daughters”, etc. “Classical” evocation systems rely on binary manifestations. In other words, to balance the Quaternary of Elements that lies at the core of “Enochian” operation, the magician must rely on Daath as the source of Balance, while the “traditional” magician usually finds support in Tiferet or even Yesod. Accordingly, the degree of neutrality required for “Enochian” rituals is much higher than for “ordinary” evocation, and this neutrality itself must be more synthetic. Tiferet, lying at the center of the Quaternary, will not provide the degree of neutrality that Daath would, which elevates above this Quaternity. By the way, the very system of Dee+Kelly+their “common” wives visually illustrates such a Quaternity, which “Enochian spirits” – the Fomorians – operated. Regarding the Heptarchical system – by “earth” here I meant not the Element of stability, but the manifested embodied world. The “Enochian” system requires a strong foundation on elemental, dense forces, thus it is rooted in the very nature of embodiment, which means it was created and developed by “embodied” beings, not “servant” spirits as is often assumed (as indeed was believed by its “successors”). “King”, “Prince”, and “Ministers” of each planet in the Enochian Heptarchical system correspond not to the Secondary causations themselves, but to their manifestation in the interworld, the Seven Kingdoms (Four Cities, two Blessed Islands, and the Tower of the Fomorians) of which are relatively conditionally correlated with the Planets and their attributes.

“Enochian” system describes the influence of Secondary causations on “pure” elemental forces of the interworld. In other words, unlike, for example, Arbatel magic, which describes the influence of Secondary causations on the world of “mixed” elements, that is – on our physical world, the “Enochian” picture represents a “view from the interworld”.
