Remembrance of the Magus

The Magus’s striving for the awakening of his mind, for its active presence in being, is directly opposed to the orientation of the collective mind toward escaping that presence into forms of virtuality.

Indeed, most human effort is usually directed precisely at “forgetting oneself,” at leaving being for artificially created, limited, and drained “realities” whose activities require neither mental effort nor development. This is not only the case with the so-called “virtual” reality of TV series and computer games; this tendency finds expression across a wide swath of social life — in social ideals, the cult of the “healthy lifestyle,” in “travels” where any new place somehow seems more important than the “familiar,” in “rest” at clubs and parties, and so on. If one looks closely, it becomes perfectly obvious that a person constantly and insistently seeks not to “think,” not to be aware, not to act, but to float in “comfortable” images and to “rest” from something unspecified. The mind usually likes to be clouded; it enjoys “sleeping,” living in illusion, which gives it a sense of well-being, recognition, and “effortlessness.”

The Magus’s efforts, by contrast, are directed toward heightened awareness: his eyes are “wide open” and the mind is always active. The Magus’s mind is present in the world, not becoming entangled in activity, yet not withdrawing from it; the Magus is not separated from the world, but neither is he merged with its currents.

This state of active awareness of the processes of the macrocosm and psychocosm, of their mutual correspondence and reflection, finds expression in the Magus’s striving to “understand everything, measure everything, experience everything,” without falling into either compulsive activity or idleness.

The Magus never wishes to limit the field of his perception, to simulate harmony by excluding from his field those “inconvenient” or “irritating” elements. The Magus does not look away from what seems unpleasant or frightening, does not try to forget what causes unease or to shrug off what seems insurmountable. The Magus looks his angels and demons in the eye, does not fear destroying what has outlived itself, and does not shrink from creating from ruins and ashes.

The Magus’s mind strives to remember itself, and in this remembrance there is both an awareness of the unity and inseparability of all that exists and an awareness of the individual manifestation, of unique activity — unity does not absorb individuality, and individuality does not obscure unity.

The Magus strives to remember his Way, that is, to feel its continuity and forward movement; the Magus does not try to flee from responsibility, understanding causal connections and recognizing the necessity of equilibrium.

The Magus strives to remember that his own actions have brought him to the position he occupies at this moment and that his actions in the present moment will carry him forward, which is why he concentrates on this moment, striving to be as impeccable and aware in it as possible.

At the same time, the Magus sees that both development and the Way are only conventional names for presence, merely some of the possibilities through which the mind of the Great Spirit knows itself, realizes itself, and lives in itself.

The Magus does not look away, is not distracted, does not seek to forget himself in any situation. He looks directly at his fears, his love, his angels, and his demons. It is thus, without looking away, the Magus walks his Way.

Only when the mind stops fleeing from presence, stops narrowing its field and striving to limit itself, to “forget itself,” does it find the keys to its nature — the nature of active presence, active creativity, active awareness.

  1. Hello Enmerkar, thank you for your articles; they help clarify certain things in my mind and understand the “structure” of the path, but I need it. I understand you are just a person like me, we are all just people, and addressing a stranger on such a matter is generally not in my repertoire because I trust no one, and writing to someone for help plus that others will read it is terrifying for me, I do not like it when someone tries to look inside me, although everyone is engaged in this, everyone loves me too much. I initially thought I needed a psychologist’s help and all that, but I started practicing magic since childhood and felt a connection to something unseen, often tossing between Christianity and demonism, generally from one extreme to another, then there was social death; by the way, that can happen to me several times a month even now. Once I came across your blog, I initially thought you were some concerned sectarian; if you are not like that, please do not take offense, I start judging people from a bad side; it makes it easier for me to live. In general, I do not know who you are, I do not know why I am writing although I do everything according to my motto: with a clear mind, with emotions that I keep under control plus willpower. I feel that magic is my half, which does not blind me with rose-colored glasses, but gives me strength from within, but as soon as things stabilize or I lose vigilance, a flock of crows is right there, and I get lost inside, everything is silent, despite the fact that I protect myself; still, this is insecurity, this powerlessness from myself, not from people drives me crazy. You wrote correctly in this article, although if it was you who wrote))). I go into some thickets, thoughts which are merely husks. Sometimes I get rid of this by using sarcasm, and then it all comes back again. I do not see the dead; I have no witches in my lineage, but this is not just an obsession; it has already become my second part. Because if I practice magic, I feel that in the material world I become stronger. I do not believe in miracles; I do not care anymore; I’ve asked for help many times, not from people, of course, but from gods, so to speak, but we all want to use each other, gods and people, angels and demons. We all gradually use each other. In general, I wrote and let the chips fall where they may, nothing to lose.

        In fact, waiting for outside help is waiting for a daddy to come along and solve all your problems. The fact that your spirit has led you on the path of magic, to Enmerkar’s blog, and also gave the sign that ‘daddy’/guru is not needed, speaks of your capability to solve your problems on your own since you have support. And you can learn on your own too. Shedding the husk is a normal phase in studying magic. If it seems to you that it is difficult, you are on the right path. You would be on the wrong path if everything was as if by magic and without effort. If you read somewhere that someone has it just so, plus they see demons and has witches in their ancestry up to the seventh generation, then with 99% probability that person has nothing but fantasies and an inferiority complex.

  3. This is not an easy position. For example, you know that magic can be different; you are free from any specific model, and that is good; you can learn what is real and who you are. You can also see the general consumption, and that is a significant experience to know. All these are qualities of your consciousness. What comes out of them and where you take them is up to you. I think you should know that for many, such experience is not obtained, and there is no such direction. Speaking of magic, this could be the result of the hunt.

But the thing is, I wrote that message in a surge; this is my first “address”, so I wrote as I wrote. But if someone did not understand what I wanted to convey, it is that I do not just need help; I need a guide who will help me, tell me about the path, about magic. But for most people, this is all entertainment and fun, and some people simply profit from it. And going to these pseudo-mages is pointless, and putting everything you have inside out is nonsense too. I believe that because of the above, it is clear why. For a long time, I engage with articles, looking for documents, information. But it’s very hard alone. Astrea, you rightly pointed out about my scatter. Because again it’s hard alone; none of my acquaintances knows about my magic practice, relatives are against it, there is no opportunity to practice magic in a practical way, so to speak.     • Most of ‘magic in practice’ can be reduced to meditations. And what you put into them is what trains your magic. You already know that candles, artifacts, and scary passes with incomprehensible spells are not the basis of magic, but just its decoration if desired.

Such is the individual pattern. And this closely resembles the expression of individual energy. I think that there is a correct position for any energy. Complete possession of it and knowing how to use it. When it is conscious, realized, and very beautiful. The chaos in thoughts is also familiar to me, due to my horoscope)) (the combinations of my energies). In general, I was immediately honest. And with such a perspective, ultimately, you see and recognize for yourself that reality is not explainable by social models. And the search begins. And little by little, it becomes known how everything is arranged. That is, if we talk about the engine, the starting point, then it is the desire and even necessity of fullness and real life. I am not a magician; I can just understand other people a little and study the world as a whole. That’s why I responded.

    If you find a guide for yourself, know that nothing comes free. To receive something, you must give something. If payment is not money, then perhaps the payment will be your time, your energy, your freedom. Do not rush to make hasty steps. Analyze. Make your own nature, your heart, your inner sensation the main authority in decision-making, not the words of others.
