Perfecting the Perfect
The Perfect One, the Great Spirit, lies beyond notions of being and non-being, beyond the concepts of reality and unreality.
For Magi this notion is important not as an object of worship or a matter of faith; it is important precisely as the «initial coordinate» relative to which the Myth organizes its concepts, and, as we have repeatedly noted, these concepts serve less as intellectual exercises than as the basis for a strategy of action suitable for the self-realization of those close to this Myth.
All we can say about the Initial Point is that it contains every possibility, every potency — in an undifferentiated unmanifest form. And in that form there is no heterogeneity, no motion, and therefore no reality.
The transition from the integral non-reality to a differentiated multiplicity signifies the emergence of reality, and each individual «perspective» is real exactly to the extent that it is aware of its limitation and individuality.
Although from an absolute standpoint the Great Spirit is eternal and unchanging and contains within itself all three states — the original undividedness, the Way to self-realization, and the final pleromic unity — from the point of view of each individual «perspective» these three states are infinitely separated by what we call «time».
In other words, although the Great Spirit in itself (and therefore each of its individual «perspectives») is wholly perfect, it also contains the possibility of manifestation, the desire for realization, and a potential for unity.
Although each of us is a vehicle for the Great Spirit’s self-knowledge, we exist only to the extent to which we are aware of our limitations and individuality.
Accordingly, the Way of individual development also comprises three stages: awareness of imperfection, refinement, and reintegration, corresponding to the separation, perfection, and reunification of the aspects of the One.
Put differently, first one must recognize one’s boundaries, understand that limitation is at once the source of our suffering and the reason for our existence, identify the essential aspects that are to be realized, and find a strategy to realize them. All this is called the Search for the Way, or seeking. When the Way is found, it naturally carries a person from one realization to another, leading through a succession of discoveries, acts of self-discovery and achievements, ever more widely and clearly «opening the mind’s eye» to the unified-in-diversity nature of reality.
Until individuality is clearly defined, until a unique Way of self-development has been formed, the mind cannot find balanced progress, harmony, and wholeness. Until the mind has clearly delineated its boundaries and shed its husk and destructive influences, it will not be able to go beyond them, for to go beyond them one must first clearly recognize them. Although such individualization is absolutely necessary, it often becomes a trap, since many travelers, having discovered their uniqueness, fall into narcissism and self-admiration, separating themselves from universal unity; moreover, this opposition frequently increases with the accumulation of power. Although the task of magic is the clear delineation of individuality’s boundaries, the search for its development paths and the obstacles on those paths, the Magus often becomes lost in differentiation, confuses individuality with separateness, and falls into struggle, becoming stuck at the early stages of development.
However, if he manages to understand that all angels, demons, spirits and gods are the same manifestations of integral unity as he is, if he manages to overcome the opposition between self and non-self, he crosses the Abyss of differentiation and attains mastery — the vision of the Ways of Unity, the awareness that perfection has not gone anywhere, the perfect became imperfect in order to know itself, reality is one in multiplicity and multiple in unity. Yet to imitate such a state at an early stage of development is to renounce the clear affirmation of oneself, to renounce self-knowledge as a distinct aspect. Here is another trap: often seekers who have received illuminations of Unity begin to emphasize Unity without fully grasping the meaning of multiplicity, without delineating the boundaries of their individuality and without having rid themselves of destructive influences. Then they lose the will to move, to develop, and to purify the mind, for it is perceived by them as already «primordially clean». In that case the value of that particular individual perspective of the Great Spirit is lost, some of its aspects remain undisclosed, and thus the incarnation is wasted and, instead of reintegration, results in needing reworking and further awareness.
Both traps — getting stuck in opposition and the imitation of unity — lead to non-realization, to the incompletion of the tasks of manifested existence and to stagnation at the given level of manifestation. For proper and harmonious development a clear and timely understanding of one’s state, its possibilities and prospects is necessary. Only then does the Way become what it must be — the reunion of what is already one and the perfection of what is already perfect.

Ramban has written well on the Perfect One: “‘One, Unique, One’: ‘There is a difference between One, Unique, and One. The Creator, when He connects to act with one force, is called ‘One’. I encountered the Kabbalist Lightman M.S. where everything is one, and among the Jews, everything is one. The world is a reflection of your desires. One can invent various principles, theorems, definitions, but these are just games of your mind, as well as all the directions born from these rules and concepts.
