Who Leans on What?

Although the developing mind should rely primarily on its own resources, any external manifestation, any concrete expression of its intent, requires an anchor point.

Amulets, talismans, sigils, gods, spirits, angels, and finally the body of the Magus are anchor points for his practices.

Therefore a Magus who practices developing awareness on the physical plane over time accumulates many connections to the anchor points he uses, since every interaction, as the Supreme Law of Magic states, establishes a connection between the elements of that interaction.

At the same time, it is clear that any interaction not based on consumption (that is, not Qliphothic in its essence) is two-sided, meaning there is always an exchange of energy between the reliant and the one on whom (or what) they rely.

Therefore the use of anchor points (and once again any external force the Magus calls can serve as such a point, from pantacles to a god’s blessing) has two important, non-obvious consequences that must be taken into account.

On the one hand, if the integration of that use into the Magus’ Orlög is insufficient (that is, when the use of a given anchor point does not fully harmonize with the nature of that Magus’ Way), it can lead to an uncompensated connection — that is, to the emergence of a related shadow. Clearly, such a shadow is a factor that burdens the mind’s development at all its subsequent stages.

On the other hand, it is important to understand that the Magus’s being can also serve as an anchor point for forces external to him, and in that case the Magus’ development of awareness is likewise hindered, since an external will begins to press on him, attempting to lean on him. The point is that if a Magus calls some external force (for example, asks for help from spirits or gods), he thereby establishes a connection between himself and them. The outcome of this interaction determines the degree of free will of its participants. If the Magus truly realizes his own desire — that is, if his action is governed by his own will — then the interaction’s balance shifts toward his will, and exactly what was intended occurs: the Magus’s will draws on external forces. However, if the Magus confuses his desire with a whim or a need, or if the Magus’ action is driven by predatory or parasitic forces, then the other participant’s will (god/spirit/vortex) will manifest more freely, and the result of the interaction will be the Magus used as their anchor.

It follows that even when appealing to gods, the Magus can fare worse — not because the gods will “take offense” or because they are “evil,” but simply because his will is too weak to control that interaction.

If, for example, a Magus asks a god/spirit for help to accomplish some action for which there is no inner need in the form of the actualization of any of the Magus’s potentials, then the Magus, in effect, has no right to it and is merely borrowing — and the debt will need to be repaid. Moreover, in that case the Magus makes himself an anchor for that force’s will, and if later the Magus wishes to withdraw from interaction with that force, this will, from the force’s point of view, look like shirking fulfilling obligations, and thus cause conflict.

Every time a Magus calls an external force, crafts an amulet or talisman, or buys or makes an image of gods/spirits, he must understand that he is performing an energetically significant act that requires strict control, because it creates connections that are difficult to manage. And although abandoning the use of anchor points while remaining an active agent on the physical plane is impossible, it is crucial to understand to what extent the Magus’s will is supported by his Orlög, and thus who is leaning on whom in a given situation — the Magus on the force, or the force on the Magus.

  1. Enmerkar, thank you very much for the article! If possible, please clarify just two details: 1) According to the Greater Arcana of Magic, the focal point should relate to the dense plane of existence. How can spirits, which are not objects of the dense plane, be focal points in this case? 2) When it comes to volitional entities, such as gods, the situation of the god’s will being dependent on the mage is clear. But how is this possible when it comes to service spirits that have no free will, especially sigils (pataqes)?

    • The focal point is not the spirit’s being, but its ‘functions’ in the manifested world. For example, when invoking a focal point in the form of Perun, the focal point is the thunderstorm or the oak in Perun’s aspect. The same applies to other manifestations, including service spirits that have their own ‘affairs’ in the densely manifested world. This also clarifies the answer to the second question – the physical manifestations of the spirit rely on humans, for instance, the fiery-solar functions of Michael rely on the warmth of the human heart.

  2. Dear Enmerkar, thank you for the article. As always, relevant. In light of the above, I have a question – should I get rid of a Talisman or Amulet if, suddenly, it has gone out of control and is performing completely different functions than those presumably laid in it? For example, I have a ‘Key of Solomon’ (a pendant on a chain) and I imbued it with the meaning of ‘keys to Knowledge’. I performed all the standard manipulations for cleansing and establishing a connection with it. But when I wear it around my neck, I feel that it awakens not the forces I was counting on. It makes me not a person striving for knowledge, but a warrior. My sense of my physical body even changes. I become stronger, bolder, and more aggressive. And it feels like there is an invisible sword in my hand. I like this feeling, but it’s not at all what I expected. I think it’s wrong when a Talisman or Amulet ‘controls’ its owner. So I don’t know what or who I rely on in this case? On one hand, I don’t want to get rid of it (after all, a connection has undoubtedly been established between us), but on the other hand, I feel it controls me even more than I control it. What should I do?

    • If the Amulet attracts certain forces to you, it does not mean that it relies on you. Ultimately, the measure is always Power: are you getting stronger from this interaction or does it weaken you. A typical example of an object controlling its owner can be considered ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’. How are things in your case – assess for yourself.

  3. There are two paths of Power – active and reactive. On the reactive path, the mage responds to the Calls of power and the Power thus guides him along the way. The criterion for a correct response is the true personal Desire of the mage and the increase of Personal Power, as a result of the use of the chance (Call of power). The verification that the Mage relies on a focal point and is the Leading creative Power is the Freedom of his actions, Freedom of his Will, and Absence of Dependence on a single focal point.
On the active path, the mage realizes his desires based on the Vision of his path. The criterion that the desire does not come from predators or parasites lies in the Development of the Power of Awareness and the Freedom of the Will of the Mage.
The probability of leaving a Shadow decreases when maintaining the balance of interaction with the focal point, using the principle of Partnership and Sacrifice, and the energetic alignment of the focal point with the realized Desire of the mage.

  4. As I understand it, in fact, the criterion for the legitimacy of calling upon the Gods is the purity of the basis for this appeal. That is, if the Mage’s desire harmonizes with his True Will, then the God proclaims the mage’s desire as his own. But if the Mage’s desire is a result of whim, then, it seems to me, the Gods simply will not grant a blessing. To be honest, I don’t understand how the Gods can facilitate the fulfillment of whim.
It seems I have a rough idea of what happens when you act as a focal point. It’s some kind of feeling, as if the world is pressing down on you. It’s as if a certain role is imposed on you, as if life’s situation demands actions from you that you do not want to take, but you have no way out. This state is a sort of chronic cognitive dissonance. And there’s a feeling that you cannot move freely through life and there is always a desire to run somewhere. That’s how it is.

  5. Frater_J.: regarding one person, the purity of the basis for this appeal is needed, the authority and power of the Mage must correspond to the level of the intended ritual.
The Gods can facilitate the fulfillment of their children’s whims.
The Gods can facilitate the fulfillment of the whims of a group of people.

  6. Not only the mage, but also the items of power he produces can become focal points for external forces in the material world – from amulets to temples and magical territories. The absence of the magician’s identification with the item of power and the ability to act without this item maintain the balance of interaction. The ritual of control of purity – The Wild Hunt.

  7. Enmerkar, thank you for the timely information. My Spirit has been heading towards you all my life)))

  8. An item like that can be the most unexpected. All the way down to a twig that fell in front of you and struck you with its shape.

  9. Time relies on space. The spirit, spirits rely on Man as a universal, predominant organism, the space of planet Earth. Spirits and other entities live in time. They actualize themselves, their time in space. Man, items, things, animals, Earth.
Parents (the older generation), their spirit, their time, rely on children. Children (the younger generation) rely on parents’ space.
Seeing the Parent (family) and the Child allows one to determine the quality, purity of the focal force.
Seeing and knowing the environment of a person and their EXISTENCE allows us to draw conclusions about where the sources of weakness and impurity of a person reside.
Only having clean Earth can a person consider and call themselves Human.
Without clean Earth, the potential of a person is denoted as Animal.

  10. In conclusion, sounds rely on ears. Words rely on the air exhaled from the lungs near the heart. Eyes rely on forms, grimaces, faces.
Machine engineering relies on metallurgy and oil extraction. Oil extraction relies on the consumer of machines, etc. The sum of focal points forms the description of the Myth, time in space.

  11. So, are you a MAGE or a sorcerer? To rely, one must move away from the socius to manage the living energy. If you live in the socius, then you are feeding off all those around you, which is vampirism.

  12. To move away from the socius, a focal point outside the socius is needed, and that is Freedom on one’s own land. No freedom on one’s land, no living energy. That is, the magic of nature in Kabbalah.
The planet is in global consumption, and leaving the socius can be afforded by those who can feel freedom on their land, and if they or he can feel this, then there is no need for them to leave the socius.
Mostly, you don’t even feed outside the socius; you are fed by it.
The socius, man is attached to the Earth. Leaving the socius is not possible; the root of the Earth is in the socius!
Leaving the socius means flying to another planet. One that is called something else. It is within the power of the Gods.
Another option is to lower your evolutionary status, for example, to a dog, wolf, plant, or the like.
    I am a dog 🙂

  13. How is a Magician to know how strong their Will is? Will they not become a plaything in the hands of beings from other worlds? – or people who these beings manipulate?……….. there are no objective criteria here…….Most likely… as a test of strength…..How well do you know yourself? How well do you feel what you can manage and what you cannot…………

  14. Although, for example, when an impulsive realization occurs – there is no need to summon or invoke anyone. If the inner resource is sufficient – hatred for the offender, for instance, then the beings ready to fulfill the Magician’s Will will come themselves. In fact, the Magician feeds them with their energy directed at a fixed goal……..And that’s all…… then you just contemplate the consequences.

  15. The most reliable support is our higher Self, Monad, using the language of this blog. In general, even from this article, it is clear that support should be sought and created within oneself, starting from one’s body. All external supports are unreliable and dangerous.
