Portals — passages between worlds
In the continuous fabric of the Worlds, as we have already discussed, there are places of least stability. Most often this instability is tied to currents of Power — the imprints left by events that are magically significant and occurred in those locations. In other words, a magical event typically destabilizes the Threshold of the Worlds, and that instability can endure for a long time. Such artificially created passages between worlds are traditionally called Portals.
There are also Portals created by non‑human beings — inhabitants of the World‑Tree system — Gods, Alvs, or Primal Ancestors.
The duration of a Portal’s existence depends on the Power invested in its creation, since the fabric of the Threshold of the Worlds is restored by the Keeper of the Rift. He — in his fearsome guise as the Wild Hunter — pursues beings not native to that world.
Since ancient times Magi have sought out, found, and used Portals to travel between worlds. A Portal is not a direct passage, however. It is only a place of instability; the actual passage opens with a particular key at a set time. Keys to Portals can be special spells, objects, people, or actions. In addition, under certain combinations of circumstances (threshold times, astronomical configurations, weather conditions), many Portals open spontaneously for a short time.
Unlike trance crossings between worlds, passage through a Portal can be accomplished with a waking mind and a physical body. Since the keys to most Portals have been lost, many Magi prefer to locate them and pass through using a well‑developed Vedogon.
What happens when one crosses a Portal? First of all, every Portal has two elements: one leading from our world into the Interworld, and one leading from the Interworld into another world. In other words, any transition between worlds cannot bypass the Interworld; however, in the case of a Portal, usually, the exit into the Interworld and the subsequent entry are close to each other. This, however, did not prevent many inexperienced Magi — after passing only the first part of a Portal — from becoming stranded in the Interworld and, over time, turning into an Utukku.
Yet the Interworld is the least of the dangers involved in crossing. Far more dangerous is what happens upon entering another world. Because the energies of all worlds differ substantially (this being the basis of their separation), as soon as a being from one world (in our case a traveling Magus) arrives in another, forces of dissolution begin to act upon him — much as a drop of ink disperses in a glass of water. This means that the longer a Magus remains in another world, the harder it becomes to preserve his self‑identity without dissolving into that world’s energy. Subjectively, such dissolution may be experienced in different ways. In some worlds it leads to the Magus’s death; in others it causes him to forget who he is and whence he is, merging with the native inhabitants of that world. Similar cases also occur in our world when a being from another world, having crossed a Portal and ended up here, forgets who it is and where it came from and, more often than not, is admitted to a psychiatric clinic where, after a course of rehabilitation, it comes to consider itself human, having simply forgotten its past.
Therefore it is vital for a Magus crossing a Portal to return in time — before the Portal closes or the Power of the other world dissolves him. If the Magus observes the necessary caution, the experience gained from such a crossing cannot be overstated.
Do magicians travel in groups – if one gets lost/forgotten, can the others pull them back home?
Is it possible to get lost at all while being in a group? Then that wasn’t a group, probably? Either everyone got lost, or everyone made it out?
