The Magical Myth describes manifested existence as a field created by the unity and struggle of two forces – a unifying, absorbing – “feminine”, maternal one, and a differentiating, separating ‘masculine’ (paternal) principle.
The Great Spirit, the Absolute, is wholly unmanifest and without qualities until it moves from absolute stillness and selfhood to self-knowledge in the totality of its aspects. At that point, on the one hand, there arises a force that holds these differentiated aspects in a nonmerging flow – Naxash, the Force of the Threshold, a kinetic power which, in essence, is a force of repulsion, preventing elements from drawing so close as to merge into one; on the other hand, since all these elements proceed from a Single Origin (even if that Origin lies beyond being and non-being), there exists between them a force of attraction – Eros (in its original sense, free of corporeal content) or Ea.
Depending on which of the forces predominates in perceiving an interaction, it manifests as growth, unfolding, or as decline or return to the Medium.
Note that Myth treats these principles not as fixed, immutable properties but as ways to describe interactions. For example, from the point of view of an observer on Earth, our planet has a feminine, generative and unifying nature, while the Sun is masculine, differentiating, since its light both allows one to see – and thus distinguish – the multiplicity of objects and, at the same time, provides the energy for their independent existence. However, from a cosmic perspective the situation is exactly the opposite: the Sun, a star, is the source of the planets’ existence and therefore, in relation to them, acts as a maternal, generative and attractive principle; at the same time, Earth, resisting its motion under the star’s attracting and absorbing influence, manifests masculine, differentiating properties. Clearly, this physical example is not strictly accurate, yet it serves to illustrate an important principle: the force perceived by the mind depends on the position of that mind.
At the same time, both in the flow of being and in the flow of mind, the forces of attraction and repulsion form the full range of vortical motion that underlies both being’s emergence and its cognition (for when we speak of the “development” of being or of its “awareness,” we are, in fact, speaking of the same process viewed from different angles).
The principle of the quaternary, grounded in the ideas just examined, not only universally describes the course of any manifestation and awareness but also helps to shape effective actions aimed at realization in the manifested world and at ordering awareness.
At the same time, a clear understanding of which of the forces involved in the process are dividing and which are unifying is one of the factors that determine the correct vector of that action. Since the same object, as we have just discussed, can play either a unifying or a differentiating role depending on the observer’s position, it is necessary to set the initial conditions clearly and to determine the sequence of the forces’ actions. For example, a destructive component may be dividing (if destruction yields new independent elements) or unifying (if it destroys ties that prevent some form of union). Therefore, although the nature of fire is largely expansive, its action can be maternal if burning leads to the return of elements to the common source. This understanding is especially important in rituals that invoke forces of different levels and orders. A breach of the balance of forces, which may result from a misunderstanding of their nature in a given operation, can lead not only to failure of the operation but also to long-term consequences. The same situation can arise within the internal processes of the mind – we must clearly understand and maintain the balance among the actions of forces of acquisition, inclusion, fusion, and absorption of ideas, thoughts, and motives. If attaining full realization were possible without clear understanding, by chance, we would already have achieved it over millions of past lives through which the stream of our mind has passed. However, the fact that we remain limited and unfree testifies that our actions must be more conscious than is customary or comfortable.
