The Legend of the Seals and Their Keepers
We have already discussed that the Tradition of the Solomonic Cycle, which divides the firmament into 72 kiner divisions and assigns a Genius to each kiner and a Demon, describes Seals that hold authority over the Spirits of the Brazen Vessel.
So what does the Legend of this Cycle say?
The Four Great Rulers of the cardinal directions, who govern the kiners and, accordingly, the Spirits, enable a Magus who has harnessed their power and taken their place to command mighty forces effectively.
It should be noted that, although Demons are balanced by Genii, the actual motion of the vortices is carried out by the Demons — the “Demons.” This is because the Genii, expressing the evolving aspect of the involutional vortex — that is, its ascending current — have no motion of their own and arise precisely as the binary analogue of the descending current, lacking substantial existence.
I want to emphasize again that the binary under discussion is not formed on the “Demons–Angels” axis, since in that case we would be speaking of different manifestations of one process: the Solomonic Cycle calls the “Angels” the direct descending vortices, and the “Demons” the reverse ascending vortices. In that sense Demons are not balanced by Angels; they oppose them, and this opposition is in dynamic equilibrium in which activity arises from the direct vortices. Thus the Solomonic Cycle (as is especially clear in the “Testament of Solomon”) calls the demons “manifestations” of Angels, their “servants.”
The binary Demons–Genii, however, belong to the same current, so in this case one can speak precisely of a balancing of forces, their mutual compensation.
In other words, the Angels’ Power subdues the Demons but does not control them; the Power of the Genii, however, allows use of the demonic vortices and redirects them, effectively governing the manifested world.
It is therefore not surprising that methods for composing the names of these Genii were, for centuries, a favorite occupation of Magi, genuine priests and pseudo-Kabbalists, who compiled tables of these names — the “Shemhamphorash” — based on the biblical book of Exodus. The word “Shemhamphorash” itself derives from the Hebrew “Shem-a-Meforash”, translated either as “Son of the Name” or “the Name Explained,” and was used to denote the Secret Name of God, the pronunciation of which granted dominion over the Universe.
Thus, according to the legend, the ancient Babylonian Magi, having studied the character and properties of the ministering spirits, gained the ability to govern their powers, opening or closing their access to the manifested world.
Discovering that over time the pressure of involutive, qliphothic forces on our world was increasing (since the level of awareness within it was growing), they considered ways to strengthen its borders.
Understanding that uncontrolled access by purely involutive entities to the manifested world leads to its destruction, they learned to balance the force of each “Demon” with the influence of the corresponding “Genius”, and to this end created 72 auxiliary vortices with focal points in the so-called Seals, integrating them into human vortices and thereby giving them vitality.
Thus 72 Lines of Keepers were created (of the Seals), each Line, though related to its corresponding kiner, remained largely universal, since by entering the shared system through its kiner it acquired the ability to correct it.
The Seals that have survived to the present, for example in Mathers’ interpretation and well known from modern editions of the “Lemegeton”, are an attempt to approximate their original images; however, centuries of stylization, redrawing and reinterpretation have made them almost unrecognizable.
Yet even in that form they have not lost the ability to serve as anchor points for equilibrium vortices, which still permit use of the 72 Spirits’ power, although modern Magi’s power and most of their understanding fall far short of what is required.
It is worth noting the difference between a Seal as an image, a Seal as an object, and a Seal as a force. What we see in books is only the image, a sigilla, which nevertheless possesses manifesting power. The original object of the Seal has this power to a much greater degree, and the Keeper embodies its very principle.
Clearly, considering the aggregate of the 72 Names of the Genii as the Shemhamphorash, Magi hoped to gain absolute power. Therefore the Keepers of the Seals were exposed to dangers not only from the “Demons”, but, to a greater extent, from megalomaniacal Magi.
The first 72 Keepers, having taken their Seals, dispersed across the world and lost all contact with one another. This was done deliberately for security, to avoid the possibility of access to other Keepers through any one of them, since the union of the power of several Seals could do as much harm as good.
Of course, each Keeper, as the bearer of his Seal’s vortex, felt the general state of the other Seals, but this awareness was vague and uncertain.
Since it was the Keeper who was the true embodiment of the Seal’s power, and the Seal itself was only the focal point of the corresponding vortex, a Seal could be lost or destroyed only in the event of the premature death of the Keeper, who had not found a worthy successor.
Over the centuries this occurred frequently.
According to the testimony of the Magi of the Golden Dawn, by the end of the 19th century only 14 Keepers remained, and after the Second World War their number fell to 9. The same source states that the minimum number of Keepers required to hold the integrity of the Universe’s borders is 3. They say that today there are 7. Will the end of the world come if the number of Keepers falls further? Hardly. But it is absolutely certain that with the death of each Line of Keepers the world loses another drop of magic, power and wonder of the secret universe — the world loses unpredictability, becomes linear, one-dimensional, and essentially counterfeit. What if the seal doesn’t want to interact with the Guardian?

What do you understand by ‘integrating a vortex into the human’?
I understand – into the energy cocoon, through the ritual, a structure is introduced, if it’s a vortex, then probably a dynamic structure. An analogous structure or its imprint is introduced into an artifact (say, the Ring of Power). And in the interaction of the artifact and the energy structure, the Seal works. It keeps the demon at bay as a prop, preventing the wall from falling.
