The Price of Error

By destabilizing the world he lives in, the Magus is plunged into a boiling maelstrom of forces, sometimes openly hostile, sometimes indifferent, sweeping him away like a mere obstacle, and very rarely — friendly to him.

If any of the social myths that sustain a more or less coherent account of the world and the rules of conduct within it is extraordinarily persistent or stable — that a special power, «destabilizer», is needed to keep life flowing — then the Magical myth, by contrast, is dangerous above all because of its instability, which is the flip side of its freedom.

In other words, when a person who knows precisely how the world works walks through that world, he is protected by the very power of his Myth, and even those “thin” places that appear in the fabric of his myth along his way are usually overcome with the help of auxiliary grounding forces, and sometimes — even by the very Guardian of the Threshold.

At the same time the Magus, who is constantly breaching the threshold and entering into confrontation with stabilizing forces, cannot rely on such aid; on the contrary, he must constantly beware of trickery and snares.

And while a person lives on firm ground under a reliable sky, the Magus walks a fine line that can rupture at any moment, dragging him either into the depths of the magma, or dousing him with the cold of nonexistence.

Therefore what a person can easily get away with can prove fatal for a Magus.

However, the reverse is also true: those forces that casually toy with a person’s life have no power over the Magus simply because he is aware of their presence and knows their tricks.

Accordingly, the key condition of a Magus’s success is his alertness and readiness for any eventuality.

Including readiness to face consequences of his mistakes, the retribution for which may exceed all bounds.

A Magus can under no circumstances count on leniency toward himself; on the contrary, he must understand clearly that any misstep will be noticed and retribution will not be long in coming.

Therefore Magi who make mistakes with impunity, instead of reveling in megalomania, should ask why they hold no interest for the punishing forces — whether because they are so great and invulnerable, or simply because their “magic” is in fact another form of the victim’s way, and their “power” is merely a play of shadows on a prison wall…

  1. Hello! Doesn’t a mage who resonates with the Power receive protection from it? The very words Light and Power imply some form of security. Moreover, you spoke about the possibility of attracting to the mage such a form of Power as Luck. Also, as far as I understand, not only is the mage interested in Power, but also the current of Power in the mage, which can direct (this trait is called Hierophant) and can protect (the rune ALGIZ or Solomon’s protective seals…). A sleepy, relaxed state is indeed dangerous in almost any endeavor, but do magicians not invent loopholes for rest or avoiding certain responsibilities?

  2. Thank you for the warning, Enmerkar. But I have a question. Given the variety of human errors, I would like examples of those that promise retribution.
After all, as they say, some mistakes are not mistakes at all but rather steps forward, each of which may not bring the desired result by itself but inevitably gets closer to the intended goal. Thank you in advance.

  3. So it turns out that the deeper the Myth is understood, the greater the desire to use it. The use of the instability of the Myth itself is the game of the Mage. As a rule, a Mage has a set of Legends expressing “power” within the Myth. If we compare the Myth to a tree, then a Mage’s Legends are the branches and everything that’s on the branches. And the root is the source, the foundation of the Myth. Only with the fall of the tree… 🙂

  4. Error + awareness = experience = strength of awareness.
    Success + unawareness = error.

Conscious error-making for the sake of a result that is otherwise unattainable now = sacrifice.

Refusal to act to avoid making errors = Fatal error.

Total stability is only possible with a complete cessation of metabolism in liquid nitrogen at T = -198 🙂

And even so, nitrogen evaporates; someone needs to refill it 🙂

  5. Maybe striving to avoid mistakes instead of striving to achieve goals, and striving to fend off enemies instead of striving to find friends – are these also distractors? Perhaps it would be more effective to neutralize this binder? After all, we want to be simply happy. On the other hand, it is enough to destabilize the edge at least once (for example, in a conscious dream) to experience what Stanislav Grof called metaphysical horror. But how to balance this binder?

    • Of course, the driving force in movement should be positive motives, not negative ones. That is, it is more effective to desire “to become free” than to “rid oneself of oppressors,” and so on. However, having positive motives, it is important to remember that in order to exit the darkness, one must pass through the darkness…

  6. If you don’t want to pay for mistakes, you can stay sitting in the garden or the pen, whichever is more convenient.
But if you climb out, pushing aside the gardener-guard and declaring “I am I” and asserting your rights to power, then your treatment will be like a fugitive food claiming adult matters, and you will be held accountable like an adult at full price, just like a stranger who has come to “foreign land” and does not wish to either step under the roof or join the team.

  7. “Fear of making mistakes should not deter us from seeking the truth.” – K. Helvetius
To better understand the raised topic, of course, you need to feel for yourself the true cost of a mistake (keep in mind this is not a guide to action). Any action of a Mage is associated with some changes in the Outside- and/or Inside- oneself. And any changes have an impact not only on the Mage themselves but also on their Environment.
Thus, it turns out that every action must be weighed and thought out, as changes, like ripples on water, affect many spheres and areas. And the Source of these actions – changes (we are speaking of the Mage) becomes very noticeable for various interested Forces and Entities. Depending on the Correctness and Reason of the action, these Entities have their attitudes toward it. Some protect him, while others strive to “remove” the consequences of that action and sometimes even its very source.
I would like to know your opinion on what has been said above. Thank you.

Yes, you are right. Everything in the World is so interconnected that the Response definitely exists.
One important point is that the Response can echo where it is least expected… and it can be not only offensive but also painful. Therefore, one must first learn Theory, because ‘Ignorance of the Law does not excuse from Responsibility’, and conversely – if your actions are Legal, then only Parasites will be among your Opponents, which is usually manageable 🙂

  9. If you allow me – continuing the topic of dreams and mistakes.
    ………………………………..

Sometimes, I wake up subconsciously uttering some words or phrases. Once, I woke up with two unfamiliar and incomprehensible words on my lips, one of which was “transurfing.” I went online and found information about it. I didn’t have time to read the extensive five-volume set, so I listened to audiobooks during my commute and while walking. I recognized elements of Castaneda in Zeland.

It wasn’t easy to grasp; after some time, I understood why. The author lacked writing experience, which made it hard for me to absorb his words. I rephrased his words into my own, which were closer in meaning, and then everything flowed smoothly.

I prefer simple, concrete techniques that can be executed and applied “here and now” without prior preparation. The technique for fulfilling desires that I adapted needed testing. (I will intentionally not disclose the technique and its details, as this is about something else). I decided to conduct an experiment.

Next, I needed a person for the sake of the experiment, to apply the technique. Soon, someone emerged who agreed to help. This was someone I had hardly known before. We began to determine what he wanted. It turned out his desires were simple, but practically unattainable given his life circumstances. The person wanted to have his own room and a computer.

We started working. He planned to buy the computer in parts since he couldn’t afford to buy it all at once. Two weeks later (he hadn’t bought any computer parts yet), his cousin called him and said, “I bought a new computer; come and take the old one, or there’s no place to put it.” Inspired by this unexpected computer acquisition, the guy began to work on materializing his own room, furniture, etc. Moreover, there was an unlivable room in his parents’ apartment that was cluttered with junk. He started renovating it. He began, but after some time – I don’t remember exactly how long, maybe a month and a half to two – the renovation was still far from completion when his grandfather unexpectedly passed away, and he inherited a one-room apartment.
    ………………………………..
I was impressed. But… then the glitches began…
A wise woman had repeatedly said: “You can’t make bullets out of shit,” while I was sharing my stories about the miraculous manifestations of his desires.

He was in a state of euphoria, coming up with new desires – to create a rock band and become famous. One day, I caught myself thinking, “Where can I find a drummer for his band?” – I told myself to “Stop” and began to analyze the situation.

Throughout our communication, he had never bothered to listen to the disk I had recorded for him with Zeland’s books. He simply did what I suggested, which was literally expressed in a few sentences. He showed no interest and didn’t try to understand why everything was happening the way it was. He decided that I would do everything for him.

I made a serious mistake. Even before the experiment, I should have looked into what kind of person he was. I should have noticed that he could have done the renovation in the unlivable room and bought the computer in parts himself, especially since he had a stable job at that time.

Instead, he constantly complained that his parents were hurting him, and at work, they unfairly fined him all the time. He was always late and couldn’t figure out the cash reports (he worked as a loader and dispatcher); he didn’t have enough money for anything. He moved into a new apartment, but problems persisted. In his troubles, everyone was to blame except him. Other than realizing two desires through our joint efforts, nothing changed in his life; furthermore, he began to insist that I help him create a rock band. The words of that wise woman finally sunk in. I said goodbye and disappeared from his life.
    ………………………………..

The plasticity of reality is also quite high. The art of changing reality is understandable. The closer the description of the world aligns with reality, and the deeper the Mage penetrates the Creator’s Laws, the higher the plasticity and the “more miraculous” the changes are, but… all these changes in reality and obtaining what one desires feel like a mockery of our own imperfections and corruption. I was very disappointed after that story, recalling what I had read in the books of Mirzakarim, about how an old man – a wizard who had gone mad from making mistakes – would approach anyone in the market and ask: “What do you want?” People knew him. The person’s eyes would light up: “I want a carpet for my daughter’s wedding,” exclaimed the delighted merchant. The old man would snap his fingers in the air, and a beautiful carpet would unfold on the merchant’s counter from thin air, and the old man – the “wizard” – would begin to cry loudly and walk away, weeping over human foolishness.
    ………………………………..
Zeland’s model is effective; Servet’s model, for example, is also effective, although it is described in much more complicated terms. However, these and other models of changing reality only provoke bitter disappointment because they are imposed onto our human corruption and imperfections. One can fulfill a multitude of desires and then weep loudly over one’s folly and the folly of those around them.

    • Here is the translation:

“I’m just being myself as usual) I don’t consider such stories to be mistakes – you can extract benefit from everything. My games with implementation had a different starting point, which is generally not that important; in fact, it probably just provided a separation between desire and energy, as described in Transurfing. But not in one person. I wanted people to be happy. This manifested in various ways – for example, once during a group trip, I wished that no one would spend anything and that everyone would be well, and strangely enough, I found someone else’s wallet with a large sum of money in my bag. Everyone was happy, including the person who lost it and later found it – he didn’t even want to count how much was left, he just collapsed to his knees (he was quite emotional) and thanked me for his rights, golden visa, and flight ticket. Everything was great, but no, friends kept remembering every 20 minutes that “we should have taken everything.”

And that’s only half of the surprise – sometimes it looked like “And I wish that the golden fish was with me in my packages.” But that didn’t upset me. I mean, of course, all of this was sad and it’s clear that any implementation happens not because of the desire for implementation, but because I think a little on a different level. You can’t obtain something material by aiming for that material thing.

I really wanted to tell everyone, “What are you talking about? Play yourselves.” And that’s how I got my first student) Who needed me as much as I needed him – so that we wouldn’t have to run around the market and cry.”
